The Perfect Basil Kit from Anthropology (Giveaway)

I bought my first plants last weekend and put my hands in fresh potting soil once again. As much as I love fall, this time of year has it’s own allure and there is nothing like that sense of satisfaction after a long day of working a garden or filling your porch full of pots.

One of the best things about spring is that I always have an abundance of basil on hand. It’s easy to grow and a little bit goes a long way so you can keep it going for a long time with the right amount of light, moderate temperature, a little water and a prayer (or two if you’re like me). Have you ever walked into a kitchen and taken a whiff of fresh basil? This is what I call a spiritual experience. Not unlike that first sip of wine after you walk through the front door on a Friday night. Can you tell that it is Thursday night as I am writing this post and I am just a little bit ready for the weekend to begin?

I was looking through the Anthropology website last night and saw this precious basil kit and thought it would make the best gift ever. And so it shall be. From me to you. Or at least, one of you. Just tell me what you’re going to whip up with your basil and I’ll enter you in the giveaway. And if you’re not a subscriber be sure to do that too. The winner will be chosen at random by noon on Sunday.

This kit is super cool. All you have to do is cut up the artful piece of paper that comes with the kit, put it a pot and cover with soil. Water according to the directions and place in a sunny windowsill. Viola! You will have basil to take you through spring. When she gets too big for her britches and summer has finally arrived just take the whole shebang outside and transfer carefully to a bigger pot or to a nice spot in your garden. Basil will be your friend all summer long.

May the best basil lover win!

Rigatoni con Pepperoni

This is true ‘common-people’ Italian food. Its not fancy, inexpensive to make, quick and is a common lunch/dinner dish in many eateries frequented by local workers in Italy. If you like pepperoni on your pizza…you're going to love this pasta dish. When our mother first came to visit us for Thanksgiving, in Maryland, we had just bought our first house and didn’t have two pennies to...

An Easter Season

I never asked my Mother to name her favorite holiday but I suspect she would have told me that it was Easter, hands down. The woman loved everything Easter. I have a gorgeous hand painted Easter Egg collection that she started for me the first year that I was married. Each and every spring I would receive a beautifully wrapped box with another fragile little treasure nestled inside. Each egg...

Roasted Chicken With Havarti Cheese

This Roasted Chicken With Havarti Cheese recipe is all my own, and it's heaven on a plate when you serve it with my Garlic Pasta, like we did tonight. I developed this roasted chicken recipe over time with all of the ingredients that I love to jazz up a chicken breast...lemon, garlic, wine and cheese. How could it not be delicious? Just remember that the key is to use a bone-in breast...

Flat Apple Pie

This Flat Apple Pie is from The Pioneer Woman and I cut the quantity since she obviously cooks for a MUCH larger crowd than I do most days. I also added lemon zest because that's the secret to my Mother's apple pie recipe and I threw in some cinnamon too. Then I read the reviews on this recipe on The Food Network Website and noticed that a lot of cooks remarked that there was...
